Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Looking for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy? Hargrave Chiropractic proudly offers HBOT at our Breaux Bridge, Lafayette, and Youngsville locations to help patients experience faster recovery, improved wellness, and better overall health.

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, often called HBOT, involves breathing pure oxygen in a controlled, pressurized environment. This process allows oxygen to dissolve more efficiently into the bloodstream and reach tissues that need it most. Increased oxygen levels help the body’s cells repair, regenerate, and function at their best.

Each HBOT session typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. During that time, oxygen saturation in the blood plasma rises, which can support healing, reduce inflammation, and promote overall recovery. HBOT is a non-invasive, safe therapy that enhances the body’s natural healing process and can complement other forms of treatment for both acute and chronic conditions.

HBOT Benefits

Many patients with a wide range of conditions have found relief and improved healing through Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Because oxygen is an essential nutrient, increasing its availability in the body can help nourish cells, support tissue repair, and promote faster recovery. HBOT has been used as supportive care for individuals dealing with chronic inflammation, neuropathy, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, cerebral palsy, post-stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury, post-concussion symptoms, multiple sclerosis, and more.

A Helpful Analogy

Think of HBOT like opening a bottle of soda. When the bottle is sealed, carbon dioxide gas is under pressure and dissolves into the liquid, making the bubbles invisible. Once the pressure is released, the gas expands, and the bubbles appear. Similarly, when the body is exposed to higher air pressure during HBOT, oxygen molecules become smaller and dissolve deeply into the blood plasma. This allows oxygen to reach tissues that may not normally receive enough, supporting cellular repair and overall organ function.

Athletic Recovery

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can also help athletes of all levels recover faster from muscle strain, sprains, and other injuries. These conditions often cause swelling and fluid buildup, which can limit oxygen flow to affected areas. HBOT increases oxygen levels in both plasma and red blood cells, helping them reach restricted tissues more easily. This enhanced oxygen delivery supports healing, reduces inflammation, and allows athletes to return to activity sooner and with greater confidence.

Faqs about HBOT
O
P
Can I overdose on oxygen?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is performed under controlled conditions by trained professionals to ensure your safety. While oxygen levels are carefully monitored during treatment, the amount used is within safe limits for therapeutic purposes. When HBOT is administered correctly, there is no risk of “overdosing” on oxygen. If enriched oxygen is not being added to the chamber, this concern does not apply at all. Always follow the guidance of your doctor and certified hyperbaric specialist during treatment.

Is Hyperbaric safe?
Yes. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has an excellent safety record when performed by trained professionals. The most common side effect is mild ear pressure or discomfort, similar to what you might feel when flying or driving through changes in elevation. This sensation can usually be minimized by adjusting the rate of pressurization during the session. If you have concerns, discuss them with your physician or hyperbaric technician before starting treatment to ensure your comfort and safety.

Does insurance cover Hyperbarics?
In the United States, insurance coverage for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is limited to certain approved medical conditions such as gangrene, radiation burns, carbon monoxide poisoning, and decompression sickness. For other uses, including the wellness and recovery treatments offered at Hargrave Chiropractic, insurance typically does not provide coverage. Our team can review your situation and discuss affordable options for care if your plan does not include HBOT benefits.

What is the difference between Mild Hyperbarics and High Pressure Hyperbarics?
Mild Hyperbarics typically operates at a pressure of up to 1.3 ATA (about 4 psi) and is safe for use in chiropractic and wellness settings. High-Pressure Hyperbarics involves pressures above 1.5 ATA and can only be administered in medical facilities approved for those levels. In Louisiana, high-pressure hyperbaric treatments cannot be performed in chiropractic offices.

Both types of chambers are designed to deliver oxygen therapy, but mild hyperbarics provides a gentler, more accessible option for enhancing oxygen absorption and supporting the body’s natural healing process. These treatments are available at Hargrave Chiropractic using safe, approved equipment to promote relaxation and recovery.

How many treatments are needed?
The number of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy sessions varies for each patient. Your doctor will determine the appropriate treatment plan based on your specific condition, health goals, and how your body responds throughout the course of therapy. Some patients notice improvement after just a few sessions, while others may benefit from a longer treatment plan to achieve optimal results.

What is Hyperbarics used for?

Traditionally, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been used to help with conditions like diabetic foot wounds, air or gas embolism, carbon monoxide poisoning, smoke inhalation, gas gangrene, thermal burns, decompression sickness, and acute mountain sickness.

Thanks to its restorative and healing effects, HBOT is now also used as supportive care for a wide range of other health concerns, such as:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Brain injuries
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • ALS
  • Anemia
  • Wound and scar healing
  • Post-stroke care
  • Post-surgical recovery
  • Enhanced athletic performance
  • Dementia
  • Bell’s palsy
  • And many other chronic or inflammatory conditions

How does hyperbarics work?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) works by increasing the air pressure around the body, allowing it to absorb more oxygen than it normally can at standard atmospheric pressure. Under these conditions, oxygen dissolves not only into the red blood cells but also directly into the body’s fluids—such as plasma, lymph, and cerebrospinal fluid.

This higher concentration of oxygen helps deliver vital nutrients to tissues and organs, even in areas with poor or restricted blood flow. By flooding the body with oxygen at a cellular level, HBOT supports healing, reduces inflammation, and promotes recovery in areas affected by injury or disease—for example, in cases of a stroke or other conditions involving impaired circulation.
