Scoliosis
Scoliosis often begins as a slight curve in the spine that gradually becomes more pronounced over time. To diagnose scoliosis in Breaux Bridge LA, Lafayette LA, or Youngsville LA, there must be at least a 60-degree sideways curve of the spine. Unfortunately, when the condition progresses to that level, it can lead to serious health complications. The positive news is that if scoliosis is detected early and managed properly through chiropractic care, further progression can often be prevented.
Although many theories have been proposed about the causes of scoliosis, there is still no clear consensus on its exact origin. However, research has shown that scoliosis is more common in young adolescent females than in males of any age group.
Starting Off Small
In many cases, scoliosis begins with a small misalignment of a single vertebra. Over time, the body compensates for this imbalance, and the spine develops “S” or “C” shaped curves. Parents or children often first notice scoliosis because of visible unevenness in the shoulders or pelvis. Unlike most spinal issues, scoliosis cannot be corrected simply by improving posture.
Although scoliosis is most common among children and adolescents, it can also develop in older adults. As people age, degenerative conditions such as osteoporosis can cause the bones of the spine to lose their normal shape. The body may then create side curves to help keep the head level. If the cause of this curvature is not addressed, it can lead to serious complications, including heart and lung problems.
An X-ray evaluation by your chiropractor is the most accurate way to detect spinal curvature. Additional orthopedic assessments, such as the Adams Position Test, can also assist in diagnosis. Chiropractors will examine the hips and shoulders and check for leg length differences, which can be indicators of scoliosis development.
Chiropractic Care for Scoliosis
Chiropractic care has been shown in multiple research studies to help slow or stop the progression of scoliosis. Many chiropractors have the knowledge and tools to provide effective, non-invasive care that may help you avoid more aggressive or surgical treatment options.
Your chiropractor will begin by reviewing your complete health history to identify possible contributing factors such as work habits, lifestyle patterns, past injuries, and recreational activities. After considering these factors, specific spinal adjustments may be performed to help reduce compensations in the spine and support the body’s natural realignment and healing process.
